The George Bush administration is expected to complete its revision of fuel economy rules for pickup trucks, minivans and most sport utility vehicles next week, implementing a new system that would seek better gas mileage.
All automakers would have to comply with the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) system by 2011, the most significant change to the program in three decades.
Under the current system, automakers must maintain an average of 21.6 miles per gallon for their 2006 model year light trucks, a number that grows to 22.2 miles per gallon for 2007 vehicles.
Automakers would need to meet fuel economy targets based on their mix of vehicles. The auto industry, which has fought past attempts to raise fuel economy standards, but expressed support for the plan's direction, said the new system would mean seven straight years of higher gas mileage requirements. General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have said the current system puts them at a disadvantage against their competitors because sales of large sport utility vehicles must be offset by the sale of smaller light trucks to comply with fuel economy rules.
In 2008, smaller sport utility vehicles like the Toyota RAV 4 would need to reach a target of 26.8 mpg while large vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado would have to hit 20.4 mpg.
Imposing mileage standards would add increased pressure to domestic automakers already struggling with profitability.

London Terrorism Attack Likely to be Repeated in US
(ContentDesk) July 9, 2005 -- A terrorist attack against the american trucking industry is likely, according to Terry M. Evans, CEO, Fleet Defender Consulting Serivces, LLC, a company specializing in providing anti-terrorism and training services to trucking companies nationally. "The governement and the trucking industry have failed to respond adequently to the imminent risk facing our nation" states CEO Evans. "Without question, trucks are the # 1 tool and method used by terroist worldwide, yet we have done little to protect this huge and very public industry. Imagine the chaos and economic disaster that would follow a terroist attack using trucks.
Tractor trailers have access to virtually any target terrorists would desire across the entire country. We are not providing even basic controls. While we focus on airports, we have left the front door wide open. Visit any truck stop in the country and you will find trucks idling unlocked and unattended while the driver sits inside...

Truck Towing
Tow trucks, also called wreckers, are used to clear disabled vehicles off highways and speedways. They constitute an emergency service that is of considerable importance in this age of heavy vehicle flow across the world. Without their efficient service, this flow would grind to a halt in less than no time.
Most tow trucks are run by private enterprises and are operated in fleets that specialize in quick road clearance and retrieval services. They are in a perfect position to supply captive customers to repair businesses and are an integral part of their economy. The government road authorities have their own tow truck fleets to service highways and areas like toll stations where bottlenecks are likely to occur if a vehicle breaks down.
There are various kinds of tow trucks in operation today, from the most rudimentary to the highly specialized.
The most basic kind is the hook-and-chain truck, and it is still in extensive use in third-world countries...

New Law Changes Highway Use Tax Rules: Installment Payment Option Eliminated
The IRS is reminding truckers and other owners of heavy highway vehicles that the installment option for paying the federal highway use tax will no longer be available. This change was included in the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 and applies to filers of Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return.Beginning with the Form 2290 for the tax year that begins on July 1, 2005 and ends on June 30, 2006, the balance due shown on the form must be paid in full by the due date of the return. In most cases, the deadline for filing the return and paying any tax due is August 31, 2005. Payment can be made by check, money order or electronically through electric payment (EFTPS).In previous years, taxpayers who timely filed Form 2290 could choose to pay the tax in four equal installments. Ordinarily, these installment payments were due on the last day of August, December, March and June.
About 148,000 taxpayers chose this option last year in 2004.In general, the highway use tax applies...

Motor Carriers Need Preparation to Ward off Big Rig Terror Attack
New York, NY (ContentDesk) August 27, 2005 -- Terry M. Evans, Chairman and CEO of Fleet Defender Consulting Services, LLC, told radio listeners this morning that a coordinated terrorist attack using large trucks and/or buses might wreak havoc on the nation's economy if carriers are not prepared to prevent it. As guest of Alfred McComber, on FOX News affiliate WMET's nationally distributed early morning talk show CODE RED!, Mr. Evans warned that we need to do more to get drug-addicted drivers out of trucks, lock down the CDL licensing process, and help fleet owners to implement more physical and operational security in their fleets.Right now, he said, fleet owners are economically discouraged from implementing strong security measures even if they want to do so.Fleet Defender (www.fleetdefender.com) provides the transportation industry with services and support aimed at reducing their exposure to the threat of terrorism..

Skateboard Tricks
As skateboarders gather experience, they start attempting advanced tricks and maneuvers. Of these, the most popular are the aerials. Ollie is one of the most advanced and popular skateboard tricks. Legend has it that it was invented by Alan Ollie Gelfand. By using this technique the skateboarder jumps over, onto or up to an obstacle.
Throughout the exercise the board appears to stick to the skateboarder's feet. The Ollie is the basic skateboard trick, from which others can follow. But remember, it is not at all easy and takes long hours of practice to learn!
The board flip is another maneuver that is very popular. In a well-performed board flip, the skater completes a landing back onto the deck after the board turns one or more time under the rider's feet while both are in the air. Board flips can be of various types.
Another common and popular trick is known as a grind. A grind is performed by directing one and sometimes both trucks onto an object...
One Way Moving Truck Rentals
One-way moving trucks pick up things at one location and drop it at another. In this case the truck does not return to the same facility. The one-way moving truck rentals cost more than round-trip rentals. These rentals also vary from company to company, and from season to season; it is difficult to find a one-way moving truck at a reasonable cost during peak season.
One-way moving truck rentals cost more during weekends as compared to rentals during weekdays.
It is more expensive to hire one way moving trucks at the end of the month, and during those months when the weather is warm. The costs of one-way rentals are largely influenced by the availability of trucks at the place where the customer is going to pick it up, and the demand for trucks where the truck has to be dropped off. So prices can vary a great deal.
It is also possible to get a fixed-rate deal. Most companies insist on a deposit.
Some companies accept only cash deposits; others...
